Meet Michelle. Michelle and her young family moved here from Victoria because they wanted to simplify things and have more opportunities to spend time outdoors and in the forest. We asked Michelle how she came to love mountain biking, about her best biking memory, her favourite trail, advice for new riders and why she`ll always be a UROC member.
"I started mountain biking nearly 20 years ago on the North Shore. Initially, I was drawn to the sport because it was unique. I also liked the rush of going fast but staying just on the edge of control. Growing up in Ontario, I hadn`t even heard of mountain biking. My very first ride was on a friend`s mom`s xc bike. It just felt `right` - a good combo of sweat with a touch of adrenaline. I was impressed that west coast parents were doing this, as it was a long shot from what my parents were doing."
"My favourite mountain biking memories are from racing Xterra. I love racing because I get to ride a bit on the edge, be on my lonesome, and all without the fear of getting lost or eaten by a bear. My favourite trail is Rapture Cliff. If I can get up there once a week and cruise along the scenic cliff I feel like my life is in balance. I get a rush just from being in the forest because I am terrified of wildlife and getting lost (city girl + terrible navigator combined)."
"If you are keen to get into riding I would say join a coached group. You’ll get coaching on proper technique and make friends to ride with."
"The trail network is a labour of love, I feel so grateful for all the work that has been done to enable us to play here. Being a UROC member is one small way to support these efforts. The Cumberland trail network has definitely put this little village on the map as a place to go if you like to ride bikes amongst many other attractions." @michellemark_movement UROC 2021 memberships are now available online. Your UROC membership directly supports the access agreement with the landowners for non-motorized trail use, youth and community mountain bike programming and trail work in the Cumberland network!
Here’s a great story about United Riders of Cumberland, the Village of Cumberland, and two forestry companies came together to create a forest access partnership. As a result of nearby forestry activities, URoC had the opportunity to access the forest and build a burgeoning new local mountain biking industry. Get your 2021 membership or donate here.
